A radiator may be flushed with a Garden Hose only when the vehicle or equipment manufacturer permits this method. The engine must be completely cold, old coolant must be collected safely, and the hose should supply a gentle flow rather than high pressure.
Modern vehicles can have sensitive cooling components and specific coolant requirements. Consult the service manual before disconnecting hoses or introducing tap water.
Never remove a radiator or expansion-tank cap from a hot cooling system.
Hot coolant can remain pressurized and cause severe burns. Park the vehicle on a level surface, switch off the engine, and allow it to cool fully.

Antifreeze is harmful to people, animals, and the environment. Do not discharge old coolant onto the ground, into a storm drain, or into household plumbing.
Some cooling systems can be flushed through an opened radiator, disconnected hose, or approved flush fitting.

Electronic bleeding procedures

Removal of a thermostat

No direct garden hose connection
A garden hose should not be forced into a sealed cooling system. Household water pressure can exceed what some open components, heater cores, seals, or temporary connections should receive.
Stop when the service procedure is unclear.
Place the drain container beneath the radiator drain or lower cooling-system connection.
Open the system according to the vehicle instructions. Some radiators contain a drain valve, while others require removal of the lower hose.
Allow the coolant to drain fully.
Inspect the removed liquid for:
Rust-colored sediment
Oil contamination
Metal particles
Sealant residue
Heavy sludge
Unusual color mixing
These conditions may indicate a mechanical problem that simple flushing will not correct.
Close or reconnect the drain point before proceeding to the next step required by the service procedure.
Connect the garden hose only to the approved flushing point.
Open the water gradually. A controlled flow is usually more appropriate than maximum faucet pressure.
The objective is to carry loose residue out of the open system, not pressurize the radiator.
Direct discharged water and remaining coolant into a suitable collection area. Early flush water may still contain antifreeze and should be handled accordingly.
Continue only until the discharge becomes visibly clean, subject to the service instructions.
Do not:
Run a cold garden hose into a very hot engine
Clamp the outlet closed
Use a pressure-washer hose
Force water backward through an unknown component
Leave the hose unattended
Start the engine unless the approved procedure requires it
Allow moving belts or fans near a loose hose
Electric cooling fans may operate unexpectedly on some vehicles, even when the engine is not running.
Tap water can contain minerals that remain inside the cooling system.
After the initial garden-hose flush, drain the system again and complete the final rinse or filling procedure using distilled or deionized water where required by the vehicle manufacturer.
This step reduces the amount of tap water remaining before the correct coolant mixture is added.
Do not guess the antifreeze concentration. Some products are premixed, while concentrates require a specified water ratio.
Mixing incompatible coolant types can cause deposits, reduced corrosion protection, or service problems.
Close all drain points and reinstall hoses using serviceable clamps.
Fill the system with the specified coolant through the designated point.
Cooling systems can trap air inside the engine, heater core, radiator, or upper hoses. Follow the correct bleeding procedure, which may involve:
Opening bleed screws
Setting the heater control
Using a filling funnel
Applying a vacuum-fill tool
Running the engine through a controlled cycle
Allowing the system to cool and rechecking the level
Watch the temperature gauge and stop the engine if it begins overheating.
Inspect every connection for leaks after the system reaches operating temperature and again after it cools.
A workshop water hose should remain flexible, resist abrasion, and maintain a secure connection under regular faucet pressure.
