What Thread Is A Garden Hose?

2026-10-08

Most standard Garden Hoses in North America use a 3/4-inch Garden Hose Thread (GHT), but the hose diameter and connector thread are not the same specification. The target market must be confirmed before selecting fittings.

What Does Garden Hose Thread Mean?

Garden Hose Thread, commonly abbreviated as GHT, describes the threaded connection used on many garden hose couplings, outdoor faucets, spray nozzles, sprinklers, and related Accessories.

In a typical system, the faucet has a male threaded outlet and the hose has a female coupling. The opposite end can then connect to a nozzle, sprinkler, hose reel, or another hose.

The important point is that thread size does not equal hose diameter.

A 5/8-inch garden hose, for example, can still use a 3/4-inch hose-thread coupling.

What Is the Most Common Garden Hose Thread?

For the North American market, 3/4-inch GHT is a common garden hose connection.

The thread is generally a straight hose thread rather than a tapered pipe thread. The watertight seal is normally created by a flat washer inside the female coupling.

Hose diameterOften 1/2, 5/8, or 3/4 inch
Sealing methodFlat washer
Typical applicationsFaucet, nozzle, sprinkler, reel

These specifications should be treated separately when sourcing a complete hose assembly.

Is Garden Hose Thread the Same as NPT?

No.

GHT and NPT are different connection systems.

GHT is normally a straight thread designed to compress a washer against a sealing surface. NPT is a tapered pipe thread that relies on thread engagement and an appropriate sealing method.

They may appear similar when viewed quickly, but forcing them together can damage the fitting or create a leaking connection.

When a garden hose must connect to pipework using NPT, the safer approach is to use a properly designed GHT-to-NPT adapter.

Is 3/4-Inch Hose the Same as 3/4-Inch GHT?

No.

This is one of the most common mistakes when ordering garden hose products.

“Hose diameter” normally refers to the internal diameter of the hose, while “3/4-inch GHT” refers to the connector thread.

A hose specification should therefore include both.

For example:

Hose ID: 5/8 inch + Connector: 3/4-inch GHT

is much more useful for production than simply stating:

5/8-inch hose

Do Different Countries Use the Same Garden Hose Thread?

Not necessarily.

Garden hose products are sold into markets with different fitting standards.

Market ConsiderationWhat Should Be Confirmed
United States / CanadaGHT / NH specification
EuropeBSP-related fittings may be used
AustraliaLocal tap and hose connection standard
Other marketsLocal thread or quick-connect system
Private-label productsBuyer-approved connector specification

This is especially important for importers because a hose can be perfectly manufactured and still receive customer complaints if the supplied connector does not match the local faucet.

How Can You Identify an Unknown Garden Hose Thread?

Start with the connector rather than the hose body.

Use a caliper to measure the fitting and, where possible, a thread gauge to identify the pitch.

Check:

  1. Male or female connection

  2. Outside diameter

  3. Thread pitch

  4. Thread profile

  5. Washer seat

  6. Hose internal diameter

  7. Target-market standard

Do not force an unknown fitting into another connector simply because both are marked “3/4 inch.”

Why Does the Washer Matter?

A garden hose connection normally depends on the washer for sealing.

If a connection leaks, the thread itself may not be the problem.

Common causes include:

  • Missing washer

  • Damaged washer

  • Incorrect washer size

  • Dirt on the sealing face

  • Cross-threading

  • Deformed connector

  • Incorrect thread standard

  • Excessive tightening

This is why changing thread tape is not always the correct solution for a standard garden hose coupling.

What Should Buyers Specify When Ordering Garden Hoses?

For wholesale or OEM orders, a complete specification should include the hose and connector together.

Our Durable Reinforced PVC Lightweight Garden Hose Pipe is available in 1/2, 5/8, and 3/4-inch hose diameters, with brass nozzles, brass connectors and tap adapters available as part of the configuration.

A buyer should confirm:

  • Hose diameter

  • Hose length

  • Connector thread

  • Male/female arrangement

  • Washer specification

  • Connector material

  • Working pressure

  • Target country

  • Packaging requirements

Why Is Connector Compatibility Important for OEM Orders?

For a retail hose program, the hose body is only one part of the final product.

The complete system may include:

  • Hose

  • Faucet adapter

  • Female coupling

  • Male connector

  • Nozzle

  • Washer

  • Quick connector

  • Hose reel

If one component is inconsistent, the entire product can generate customer complaints.

From a manufacturing perspective, matching the hose, fitting and accessory specification before mass production is more efficient than correcting compatibility problems after shipment.

Can Garden Hose Fittings Be Customized?

Yes.

OEM and ODM projects can involve:

  • Connector material

  • Thread standard

  • Hose diameter

  • Hose length

  • Color

  • Nozzle

  • Tap adapter

  • Packaging

  • Logo printing

For distributors selling into a specific regional market, it is better to confirm the complete connection system before the quotation is finalized.
