The thread on a Garden Hose depends on the country and target market.
In the United States and Canada, ordinary garden hose couplings commonly use 3/4-inch Garden Hose Thread, often written as:

GH
NH
NHR
3/4-11.5 NH
This connection belongs to the hose-coupling thread family covered by ASME B1.20.7. The standard applies to threaded parts used on hose couplings, valves, nozzles, and related fittings.
Other markets may use G 3/4 BSP parallel thread or proprietary quick-connect systems. A product described only as “3/4 inch” is therefore not automatically compatible with every garden tap.
The description identifies the nominal hose connection and thread pitch.
3/4 refers to the nominal hose connection size.
11.5 refers to the number of threads per inch.
NH refers to National Hose thread.
The actual outside diameter of the male thread is larger than 3/4 inch. This is normal for nominal plumbing and hose sizes.
Standard garden hose thread is generally a straight or parallel thread.
The watertight seal is normally created by a flat washer inside the female coupling pressing against the end face of the male fitting.
This means the thread mainly pulls the two parts together. It is not normally intended to seal through thread wedging in the same way as a tapered pipe thread.
Check the washer first when a garden hose connection leaks.
Garden Hose Thread and National Pipe Thread are not the same.

A 3/4-inch GHT fitting should not be forced onto a 3/4-inch NPT fitting. They may begin to engage, but the thread form, diameter, and sealing method are different.
Use a properly manufactured adapter when converting between hose and pipe threads.
In many European and international watering systems, taps and adapters are described as G 3/4.
G 3/4 is a British Standard Pipe parallel thread.
North American 3/4 GHT and G 3/4 BSP are not identical. Their pitch and thread geometry differ.
This is why an imported hose connector may:
Start but tighten poorly
Leak even with a new washer
Damage the faucet thread
Stop after only a few turns
Require a regional adapter
A 1/2-inch, 5/8-inch, and 3/4-inch garden hose can all be assembled with the same regional faucet-thread standard.
The hose diameter describes the water passage. The threaded coupling describes the connection to the faucet or accessory.
For example, a 5/8-inch hose may have:
A 3/4-inch GHT female coupling for North America
A G 3/4 adapter for another market
A quick-connect fitting matched to a proprietary system
A custom industrial coupling
Always specify both the hose diameter and the connection standard.
Products intended for the United States or Canada are likely to use GHT. Products intended for Europe, Australia, the Middle East, or other markets may use BSP-related threads or quick connectors.
Use a caliper across the widest part of the male thread. Do not assume the nominal size is the measured diameter.
A thread gauge provides the most reliable result. Visual comparison is not enough when two thread forms appear similar.
A female hose coupling with a flat washer usually indicates a face-sealing hose connection.
Look for markings such as:
GHT
NH
NHR
BSP
G 3/4
NPT
M or F for male and female
Do not force the connection. A correct fitting should turn smoothly by hand before the washer begins to compress.
A garden hose system may include several different threads or connection methods:
Female hose coupling at the faucet end
Male hose coupling at the nozzle end
Tap adapter
Quick connector
Shutoff valve
Y splitter
Vacuum breaker
Spray gun
Hose reel inlet
Pump adapter
One complete kit may therefore need more than one thread specification.
For a normal washer-sealed hose connection:
Check that the washer is present.
Remove dirt from the sealing face.
Thread the coupling by hand.
Tighten until the washer is compressed.
Avoid excessive tool force.
Turn on the water and inspect for leaks.
Thread-sealing tape is usually not the first solution for a standard GHT connection because the washer provides the seal. Tape may be appropriate on the pipe-thread side of a GHT-to-NPT adapter when the fitting instructions call for it.

In North America, the common garden hose connection is 3/4-11.5 NH or GHT. Many other markets use G 3/4 BSP or quick-connect systems.
Never assume that two fittings are compatible simply because both are marked 3/4 inch. Confirm the thread standard, pitch, sealing method, and target market before placing a bulk order.
