How To Install Dryer Vent Hose?

A dryer vent hose is the short duct connection behind a clothes dryer. Its job is to carry hot, moist, lint-filled air from the dryer to the fixed exhaust duct and then outside the building.

For safety, this connection should not be treated like an ordinary flexible hose. Dryer exhaust involves heat, lint, moisture, and airflow resistance, so the material and installation method matter. In most residential applications, smooth metal ducting is the safer choice, while plastic, vinyl, crushed foil, and ordinary PVC hose should not be used for dryer exhaust.

Choose the Correct Dryer Vent Material

The first step is to confirm the duct material. A dryer vent should normally use rigid or semi-rigid metal ducting with a smooth interior. The smooth inner wall helps reduce lint buildup and improves airflow.

Avoid using common Garden Hose, PVC hose, vinyl hose, thin unsupported foil tube, or damaged flexible hose for dryer exhaust. These materials are not designed for hot dryer air and may create airflow restriction or fire risk.

If the dryer manufacturer gives a specific duct requirement, follow that instruction before buying any hose or duct part.

Measure the Dryer Outlet and Wall Duct

Most household dryers use a 4-inch exhaust outlet, but the installer should still confirm the dryer outlet and wall duct size before installation. A mismatched connector can leak air, collect lint, or come loose during dryer vibration.

Measure the distance from the dryer outlet to the wall or floor exhaust opening. The connection should be as short and straight as possible. Long runs, sharp bends, and crushed sections make it harder for moist air and lint to leave the dryer.

A short, clean path improves drying efficiency and reduces maintenance problems.

Position the Dryer Before Final Connection

Move the dryer close enough to connect the duct, but leave enough space to work behind it. Do not push the dryer tightly against the wall before checking the duct shape.

The transition duct should not be flattened, kinked, twisted, or squeezed behind the appliance. A crushed duct can restrict airflow even when the outside connection looks correct.

After connecting both ends, slowly move the dryer into position while watching the duct. If the duct collapses, use a better routing method or a suitable metal elbow.

Secure the Connection

Attach one end of the duct to the dryer outlet and the other end to the wall duct. Use clamps designed for dryer duct connections. The joint should be tight enough to stay in place, but not so tight that it damages the duct.

Avoid using screws that project into the airflow path. Protruding screws can catch lint and increase blockage over time.

Foil tape rated for metal duct use may be used where appropriate, but ordinary tape should not be relied on for long-term dryer exhaust sealing.

Vent to the Outside

A dryer vent must discharge outside the building. It should not vent into an attic, garage, crawl space, wall cavity, ceiling space, or indoor room.

Dryer exhaust contains moisture and lint. Venting indoors can create humidity, mold risk, dust buildup, and possible fire hazards.

Check the exterior vent hood after installation. The flap should open when the dryer runs and close when the dryer stops. If the flap is blocked by lint, insects, paint, or debris, airflow will be reduced.

Test the Dryer After Installation

After installation, run the dryer on an air or heat cycle and check the airflow at the outside vent. You should feel air moving out of the vent.

Also check behind the dryer for loose connections, air leakage, unusual noise, or duct movement. If the dryer takes longer than usual to dry clothes, the duct may be blocked, crushed, too long, or poorly connected.

A new duct does not remove the need for regular cleaning. Lint can still build up over time.

Maintenance After Installation

Clean the lint filter before or after each load according to the dryer instructions. Periodically inspect the transition duct and exterior vent.

Warning signs of poor dryer vent airflow include:

  • Clothes take longer to dry

  • Dryer surface feels unusually hot

  • Burning smell appears during drying

  • Lint collects around the dryer

  • Exterior vent flap does not open

  • Laundry room becomes humid

If these signs appear, stop using the dryer until the vent system is checked.
